Perception of departmental vs. research council funding
T

Hey!

Due to the recession etc etc etc at the moment it is very difficult to get funding from anywhere! Nobody will care where you get your funding from....You will do your PhD and you will be judged on this! I know loads of peeps who have got funding off random bodies... and it did'nt do them abit of harm. Must charities at the minute are rejecting grants as they just do not have the money!!!!!!Take your funding and be happy you have it.

To PhD or not?

Hey!

It sounds as if you have some really tough decisions to make! I think that you should not go into a PHD hearted as is will really test you over the the years and sometimes you really feel like quitting! It is hard to make a choice on superviosrs wether meeting them in person or not as sometimes the most personable person may be a nightmare to work with or someone who gives you bad vibes initially may turn out to be the ideal boss! I think that this is just the luck of the draw and there is no way to guarantee if you will have a good relationship with your supervisor or not.

It is additionally difficult for you as you say you would prefer to stay in London after all your moves to different locations. That is completly understandable and I am sure any potential supervisor would understand that. You could perhaps try and delay your PhD position for a few months to give you some time to think about things. Alternatively, alot of research institutes in London advertise tech or RA jobs so perhaps if you applied for these this will be able to determine if you like research or not and will give you a foot in the door with potential supervisors.

Best of luck!

10 months to go, what keeps 'you' going in the last year?

Basically the knowledge that I am closer to the end than I am to the start! A PhD was once descrbed to me as an endurance test which prtetty much summs it up!!!! I am looking forward to a nice holiday once i'm all done! Good luck!

Returning to study after six years away?

Hey! Its never to late! I think you just have to perservere with the Masters applications and you will be ok.
I applied for an MRes a few years ago and got into it no problem with my 2.2 and then subsequently into a PhD after a few interviews. I would imagine that changing your career now only makes you look more committed rather than just doing it for the sake of it. Try and get some work experinece as well as lab life is not for everyone! Plus if you are looking for a stable career job then you will not find it in academia.Good luck!

PhD and feelings of inadequacy

Hey,
I think everyone has days like that all the time so don't beat yourself up about it! At the end of the day you got into the PhD on merit and who cares at this stage what you got as an undergrad.
